About me
I am a qualified Architect and self-taught Artist with many years of creative career. I was born and grew up in Poland, where I studied architecture and have lived and worked in London for nearly 20 years now. Along with my architectural profession, art has always been present in my life and has had a significant influence on my perception of the world. I inherited my love and passion for art and painting from my mother, which started my journey into art. After taking a break in order to concentrate on architecture, I returned to creating artwork in 2007 and focused on abstract painting and life drawing.
Art and the creative process of articulating abstract thoughts fascinate me, and I am constantly discovering new areas in art which I wish to explore.
Artist Statement
As an artist, I seek to create an emotional response to nature, landscape or music and express it through a variety of strong textures, the composition of shapes, marks, patterns and contrasting colours.
I found abstract painting to be the best form of expression of my response to the outer world, reflections, thoughts and the state of mind. I collect the inspiration during my long, solitary walks in nature, where being disconnected from my everyday business brings this incredible calmness and a sense of being an integral part of the magnificent surroundings. Like this lost connection is rebuilt in this very moment of solitude and harmony.
My art is about feelings and emotions which everyone holds deep inside; about dreams and hopes…about passion and joy….about loneliness, fear and loss.
The variety of textures mixed with the opaque and transparent layers of paint is a fundamental part of my work and artistic style. The essence of the abstract form is freedom of movement, hence there are elements of my paintings formed by “uncontrolled paint movements”. Allowing paint to go its own way, to naturally fill the canvas, adds a unique, unexpected element to my work. It is like in life…you never know what it can bring or take away.
Inspired by the beauty of nature and the surrounding landscape, I mostly work from memory, transforming the essence of realistic nature scenes into an abstract composition of solid, textured forms and shapes. These forms are broken by a layer of transparent and opaque paint marks, brush strokes into more undefined scenes and an almost flat composition.
Method of work
I work mostly from my London-based studio with oil and acrylic mediums on large-scale canvases. Working with oils brings some sort of rhythm to the way I work; the drying process forces me to pause and reflect on forms and textures resonating back from the canvas. It is a very intuitive process.
I love texture, strong palette knife marks and brush strokes being combined with the transparency of the flowing paint and prefer to work with a limited colour palette. I have been fascinated with experimenting with rust and metallic paints and watching them transform while painting.
Bold textures and rust paint are a signature element of my artistic expression.
